Five lucky Limerick residents were given an early Christmas present today (Wednesday 6th December ’06) when the Mayor of Limerick Cllr. Joe Leddin presented them with a weekend break for two to one of five different European cities.
The exclusive competition was run by Shannon Development and Limerick City Council in association with the Limerick Leader newspaper. It was open only to residents of Limerick city and county.
Five separate prizes of a weekend for two people were up for grabs in the competition and the winners were: Patricia Melling from Caherdavin Lawn, Limerick who won a weekend break to ‘s-Hertogenbosch in Holland; Evelyn Mulcahy from Meanus Kilmallock who won a trip to Ghent in Belgium; William Musgrave from Glin won a trip to Mechelen in Belgium; Gabriela Avram from AbbeyRiver Court, Island Road, Limerick won a trip to Breda in Holland; and Marie Power from Balinvreena, Kilmallock won a trip to Chester.
These five cities are Limerick’s partners in an EU ‘Water in Historic City Centres’ (WIHCC) project, a four year European funded Interreg 111B project. The overall aim of WIHCC is to redevelop old watercourses to enhance historical city centres. The restoration of the Park Canal is the Limerick project, and is a collaborative undertaking administered by Limerick City Council and Shannon Development. As part of ongoing work to develop Limerick’s connection with water, Shannon Development and Limerick City Council are working on restoring the disused Park Canal, as part of an EU project entitled Water in Historic City Centres (WIHCC). Walkers, joggers, cyclists, fishermen and canoeists will be among those to benefit from the restoration of Limerick’s Park Canal.
The Park Canal restoration is the jewel in the crown of an overall Limerick Riverside City project, which sets out a vision for a new zone of development in Limerick city and its hinterland, based around the river and canal.
“The aim of the project is to make the Park Canal a more attractive area for visitors and residents alike. We want them to enjoy it as a leisure area, and we feel it will provide a wonderful amenity for the general public in the Limerick area, and also for those 3,000 people who work at the National Technology Park and the University of Limerick campus”, says Kieran Reeves, Limerick City Council.
“The Competition was undertaken as a way of making residents of the 6 EU cities more aware of each other and the work that is being undertaken to restore waterway in their cities. In Limerick for instance we are creating a link between the ‘Medieval City’ and the ‘University City’, the canal restoration will act as a catalyst for residential, commercial, leisure and tourist related developments that will complement the substantial investment that has already taken place in the city centre”, says Gerry Glynn, Shannon Development.
The Competition prize includes transport to the selected city, two night’s accommodation including breakfast and a tour of the local water project in the WIHCC city.
All winners from around Europe will travel on 20th April and return on 22nd April 2007. All of the cities will receive visits from residents of the other five cities, creating a mini-network learning more about the other local projects. They will be shown around the local Water in Historic City Centre projects including; the Park Canal in Limerick City; the reopening of the old city port and plans to reintroduce the river Mark through Breda; the reopening of the Lower Sheldt in Ghent; the restoration of the river Stadsdommel to its former condition in s-Hertogenbosch; the restoration of canal in Mechelen, and the reopening of Chester’s new riverside promenade on the River Dee. Further details on each of the cities tourism attractions can be obtained from the WIHCC website www.wihcc.eu
