Marking 30 Years in the Shannon Free Zone
Shannon Development hosted a lunch to mark the 30th Anniversary of the establishment of Elsevier Ireland Ltd at the Shannon Free Zone. The lunch was attended by Tony Killeen TD, Minister for Labour Affairs, Senior Representatives from Elsevier Ireland together with Shannon Development Executives.
Elsevier Ireland Ltd was founded at Shannon in 1976 and currently employs some 135 people in the publication and support of medical, technical and scientific journals. The company started with just two staff providing Subscription Services for 12 biomedical journals, and in the following year, the Typesetting and Desk Editorial Departments were set up. Today, the Elsevier Shannon operation is the second largest production unit in the Elsevier Group, producing 423 journals, generating 643,000 pages, and with its Global Customer Support department answering 4,000 queries per week.

Working in partnership with the global science and health communities, Elsevier's 7,000 employees in 71 offices worldwide publish more than 2,000 journals and 2,200 new books per year.
Speaking at the lunch, Minister Killeen said “More and more companies are discovering the benefits of locating in regional centres throughout Ireland, and Elsevier Ireland’s track record shows clearly that companies can be globally competitive, and can survive and grow, in a regional location such as the Shannon Free Zone”.
Kevin Thompstone, Chief Executive, Shannon Development, said “The growth and development of Elsevier Ireland Ltd at Shannon over the last 30 years mirrors the continuous reinvention which Shannon Development has had to undertake to maintain the Free Zone’s position as one of the leading business parks in Ireland, in terms of its size (over 7,000 jobs), its multi-sectoral nature, and its interaction with Shannon Airport and the surrounding region”.
Mr Brendan Curtin, Managing Director, Elsevier Ireland, said “The 30th anniversary of Elsevier Ireland’s set up in Shannon is an important milestone for the company, and is a tribute to the excellent staff who worked with us over those years. Within the Elsevier Group, the Shannon operation has developed a very good reputation for innovation, contributing many ideas which have been implemented globally. While Elsevier has adopted the outsourcing model, the overall number of staff in Shannon has continued to increase. Combining outsourcing with new internal roles has proved a very successful model for Shannon. First time visitors often ask why Elsevier set up an office in Shannon, however, they never ask why Elsevier stayed. Once they work with us for a while, they know the answer!”.
