Five European Weekend Breaks to be won

Limerick people targeted for exclusive international competition

An exclusive competition which offers residents of Limerick city and county an opportunity to win five weekend trips to European destinations has just been launched by Shannon Development and Limerick City Council in association with the Limerick Leader newspaper.

There will be five separate prizes of a weekend for two people (who must live in the Limerick City or County) to enjoy a weekend city break in one of the following cities; Breda or ‘s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands, Ghent or Mechelen in Belgium, or Chester in the UK. These five cities are Limerick’s partners in an EU ‘Water in Historic City Centres’ (WIHCC) project, a four year European funded Interreg 111B project. The overall aim of WIHCC is to redevelop old watercourses to enhance historical city centres. The restoration of the Park Canal is the Limerick project, and is a collaborative undertaking administered by Limerick City Council and Shannon Development.

The prize includes transport to the selected city, two night’s accommodation including breakfast and a tour of the local water project in the WIHCC city. All winners will travel during the same weekend. All of the cities will receive visits from residents of the other five cities, creating a mini-network learning more about the other local projects.

To enter the competition you just need to answer a few simple questions about the overall WIHCC projects. All of the questions can be found on the Water in Historic City Centres web site – www.wihcc.eu  The answers are contained in the website and you can enter online.

For those who prefer to fill in the entry form by hand, a project information leaflet and competition entry form can be picked up from any of the following locations: Limerick City Council Offices, City Hall, Limerick; Shannon Development’s Limerick Office, the Granary, Michael Street, Limerick; Limerick Leader Office, O’ Connell St., Limerick; Limerick Tourist Information Office, Arthur’s Quay, Limerick; Adare Tourist Information Office. Completed written entry forms can be returned to these offices. You can also send a stamped addressed envelope to the Shannon Development’s Michael Street office and an entry form, booklet and terms and conditions will be posted out. Closing date for entries is 15th November 06.

The winners will travel on April 20 and return on April 22 2007, they will be shown around the local Water in Historic City Centre projects including; the reopening of the old city port and plans to reintroduce the river Mark through Breda, the reopening of the Lower Sheldt in Ghent, the restoration of the river Stadsdommel to its former condition in s-Hertogenbosch, the restoration of canal in Mechelen, and the reopening of Chester’s new riverside promenade on the River Dee. Further details on each of the cities tourism attractions can be obtained from the WIHCC website www.wihcc.eu

Limerick will welcome ten winners from the partner EU cities to see Limerick Riverside city and to check out progress on the Canal Park project. The competition will be part of the celebrations for the completion of the Water in Historic City Centres’ project
