Shannon Estuary welcomes largest ever cruise ship

The largest cruise ship to ever sail into the Shannon Estuary docked in Foynes Port, Co. Limerick, on Friday 28th July 2006. The cruise ship “Black Watch” called en route from Greenland to Europe. The ship is 205 metres long and carrying some 950 passengers and 250 crew.

The ship spent the day in the Port, and Shannon Development tourism staff briefed crew and provided tourism information for passengers letting them know about the multitude of local tourist attractions, bringing a welcome boost to the Shannon Region’s key tourist attractions.

Operated by Fred Olsen, one of the largest cruise business organisations internationally, this visit highlights the attraction of the Shannon Region for cruise calls and supports the joint marketing approach taken by Shannon Development and Shannon Foynes Port Company to develop this aspect of the local tourism product further.
