Two new major exhibitions for Limerick City Gallery of Art

Limerick City Gallery of Art is hosting two new major exhibitions from Friday 12th September ’08, by Turner Prize winner Simon Starling and by socially engaged Dublin based artist, Michael McLoughlin. The Exhibitions are being opened by Olivia Loughnane, Shannon Development Director of Research and Communications, and will run daily at the Limerick City Gallery of Art in Pery Square Limerick until 16th November, admission is free.

“I would like to congratulate Mike Fitzpatrick and his team at the Limerick City Gallery of Art for securing this prestigious exhibition. Shannon Development has for many years encouraged the direct development of the artistic sector, and I am delighted to open this exciting exhibition which will be enjoyed by the many local, national and international visitors,” said Ms. Loughnane.

This is Starling’s first major exhibition in Ireland, and presents previously existing work exhibited with a newly commissioned work, Mirrored Wall Head, 2008. The work references the stone wall tradition particular to the West of Ireland and involves a dry stone wall being constructed at the Limerick City Gallery of Art. The process involved producing specially replicated stones which allowed the wall to mirror itself.

McLoughlin has exhibited widely in Ireland and internationally but this is his first museum exhibition and will present bodies of new work. McLoughlin’s process involves connecting with specific groups in society and developing work in audio, film, drawing, photography and sculptural installations, which explores their collective histories and social environments. A new body of work exploring an aging community explores Bingo is the primary activity of social engagement. Installations of audio recordings, from artist organised bingo events, together with a series of installations study the various aspects of the activities and how individuals respond to them.
