New Turkish Development Agency Travels To Shannon To Study Regional Development In Action

A high profile delegation from the newly formed Mid Black Sea Development Agency in Turkey is in Ireland this week (8th-10th  March 2010) on a fact finding mission to study the Irish experience of regional development.

The group is meeting with Shannon Development, Ireland’s only regional development agency, which last year celebrated its 50th anniversary. During their stay the group will receive a comprehensive brief on all aspects of regional economic development from key Shannon Development personnel. They will learn about the many innovative and pioneering actions and strategies devised by the Shannon Development over the years to generate regional economic development in the Shannon Region.

Shannon Development international reputation as a pioneering and innovative development agency over the past 50 years was a factor in the group choosing to come to the Shannon Region. Welcoming the group to the Shannon Region Dr. Vincent Cunnane, Chief Executive, Shannon Development said: “The name Shannon is synonymous with the triumph of innovation over adversity. Many of the economic development concepts and initiatives developed first at Shannon were subsequently applied on a national scale within Ireland, in a wider European context, and worldwide. As such we are delighted to share our knowledge with the newly created Regional Development Agency in Turkey.”

The Mid Black Sea Development Region is situated on the Black Sea coastal region of north Turkey and is comprised of four Provinces; these are Amasya, Corum, Samsun and Tokat, with a combined population of over 2 million. The representatives visiting Ireland comprise representatives from the Board of Directors of the new Turkish agency, Regional Governors, Mayors and Chairmen of various Chambers of Commerce, President of the regional University, Provincial Councils and President of the General Assembly.

The schedule for the visit is being co-ordinated by Shannon Development and includes briefings at many of the Company’s strategic business and technology locations around the Shannon Region. Among these are the Shannon Free Zone, WestPark, Shannon and the Information Age Park Ennis, Co. Clare, where they will be welcomed by the Mayor of Mayor of Clare Councillor Tony Mulcahy. They will visit Shannon Heritage and attend a medieval banquet at Bunratty Castle, which was one of the first tourism innovations developed by the Company in the early 1960’s. They will also visit the iconic Cliffs of Moher. In Limerick they will be welcomed by the Deputy Mayor Cllr. Denis McCarthy and will visit Innovation Works at the National Technology Park in Limerick. The group are also being briefed by the IDA and Enterprise Ireland in Dublin.
